Since 1959, 371 students have graduated from the hospital-based training and teaching programs, including 116 with Ph.D. degrees and 146 with master’s degree. The oncology program has become the key Oncology Discipline of National Education Ministry starting from 1989.       Authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Health, the hospital has organized many classes for advanced trainees in the fields of pathology, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology since 1954. To date, thousands of Chinese doctors have been trained in these classes. For the last 10 years, there have been ten national-certificated continuing education programs carried out nationally.
In our efforts in fighting cancer, we are constantly exploring its pathogenesis and etiology, developing its early diagnose and treatment and finding its essence of an optimal strategy for prevention and combined-modality treatment, and these research activities have lead to the establishment of Cancer Institution of Fudan University in our center. Now we have state-of-the-art equipment and technology of cell biology, molecular biology and genetics as well as breeding rooms for animals and nude mice in this institution, and we are now implementing numerous studies on molecular, cellular and xenograft models. In 2009, we were awarded 72 scientific research projects, and the total research funds reached 12.522 million Yuan, and we published 165 scientific papers, including 82 in internationally recognized journals and 65 in well-regarded professional journals. We also compiled seven publications and obtained one patent. Additionally, we received the Chinese Medical Association Third Price Award entitled“The establishment and application of precise radiotherapy techniques for primary liver cancer.” and Shanghai Medical Association Second Price Award entitled “The research on mechanisms of lung metastasis of breast cancer and its clinical application.”.
We are working towards one of the best cancer centers in Asia by expanding our connection to the world’s best cancer centers. FUSCC established a sister institute with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2003, The Cancer Institute, Singapore Healthcare Group in 2005, Institute Gustave-Roussy in 2008, and Cancer Research Institute of Kanazawa University in 2010. Every year many of our faculties go overseas to receive training and to present the seminars. We had extraordinary international exchange in 2009, including 46 groups of 132 medical experts coming from many countries such as Japan, Britain, France, USA, Germany, and Italy to have visited the center and given 36 lectures. During the year, the center successfully hosted nine major international conferences. We are trying our best to host high-quality international conferences and to participate in international symposia, because our guests see China through us, and we stand for China in the eyes of the world..
