The department of hepatic surgery was established in 2015. Our department provides state-of-the-art treatment for patients with primary cancer of liver, gallbladder, bile duct and secondary liver cancer from colorectal cancer, gynecological neoplasm, breast cancer, sarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and so on. Furthermore, we also treat benign liver lesions including hemangioma, adenoma, focal nodular hyperplasia, cyst and so on. Patients receive seamless multidisciplinary care from a team comprised of hepatobiliary surgeons, diagnostic radiologists, interventional radiologists, medical oncologists, and pathologists.
The director of our department, professor Lu Wang, named the principle investigator (PI) of liver cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT). He is a very skillful liver surgeon with over 5000 liver resection experiences and noted for minimally invasive liver surgeries. As expert in laparoscopic liver resection promoting and developing committee of China, he has completed over 1000 laparoscopic liver surgeries. Directed by Professor Lu Wang, we performed annually over 700 liver surgeries of which 40% were laparoscopic surgeries. Even newly established, the department is already ranked in top 3 liver surgery centers of Shanghai.
For patients with primary liver cancer, we provide not only the advanced liver resection procedures but also multiple treatments for advanced stage tumors and adjuvant treatment including TACE, radiofrequency ablation, target treatment, and systemic chemotherapy. For patients with colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM), we provide unprecedented potential for long-term survival and cure based on MDT. Cooperated with colorectal surgery team, patients with CRLM have beneficial option of simultaneous colorectal resection and liver resection even in minimally invasive way avoiding from the burden of two operations. For initially un-resectable tumors, we provided a chance of curative resection by associated liver partition and portal vein ligation staged hepatectomy (ALPPS).
Our department also has plenty of experience of treating liver metastasis from other cancers including gynecological neoplasm, breast cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, sarcoma, and so on.
Several clinical trials are organized in our department aimed to prolong survival, improve surgical effects and prevent recurrence. We do the best efforts to combine the research works and clinical practices. Our researches are granted by three terms of The National Natural Science Funds, The National Research Foundation for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education of China and The Natural Science Funds of Shanghai. Annually, we sponsor national liver surgery forum participated by over 2000 members all over the country.
