With the rapid development of clinical nutrition and technology, the clinical nutrition is getting more attention from the society recently. The clinical nutrition is the fundamental supporting tools of almost all treatments of various diseases; it reinforced the process of clinical treatment and patients’ recovery, especially in patients with cancer. Unlike other common diseases, stress state of tumor bearing body and the tumor tissue unceasing proliferation, will consume the patient’s own nutrition. Therefore, providing the patients with proper nutrient treatments is one of the essential parts in an integrative treatment.
Patients who are receiving radiotherapy, chemotherapy, having surgery, patients with hypoalbuminemia or with cachexia, all need professional nutrition treatment from experts in the field. The proper nutrition treatment can prevent patients from malnutrition and treat cachexia, improve patients’ tolerance and compliance to the medication, control and cure certain adverse effects, as well as improve the quality of their daily life.
The Nutriology Department of Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center is one of the important departments in the hospital multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment system. This young, flexible, and dynamic department consists of a team of motivated and innovational professionals. There are several divisions under the clinical nutrition department, such as Specialist Out-patient Service, Counseling Out-patient Service, Body Composition Testing Service, and a Nutrition Collocation Room. The Nutriology Department is a new type of department that incorporates the clinical disease diagnosis and treatment with the nutrition consultation and guidance. It takes charge of the nutrition consultation, nutrition education and propaganda, the management of dietary treatment, etc.
The subjects that have been carried out for now:
1.Nutritional screening, nutrition assessment and body composition testing.
2.Advice for the results of nutrition assessment and body composition testing.
3.The basic diet, dietary therapy and EN preparation for patients with tumor.
4.Recovery after operation in patients with breast cancer, thyroid cancer, gynecological cancer, colorectal neoplasms, oropharyngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer and lung cancer tumor and preparation before operation.
5.The treatment of patients with anemia, low serum albumin and malnutrition after radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
6.The guidance of EN and nutrition supplements for patients.
7.Teaching work for nutrition major students.
8.Research on nutriology and cooperation with other clinical departments.
