“Novel Probe for Precision Theranostics of Prostate Cancer” from the Department of Nuclear Medicine Wins Gold Award at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

At the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in Switzerland, the project “Novel Nuclear Medicine Probe for Precision Theranostics of Prostate Cancer”, led by Professor Shaoli Song, Chair of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, stood out among over 1,000 global entries to win the prestigious “Gold Award with Congratulations of the Jury”. This year’s exhibition attracted more than 1,000 invention projects from 35 countries and regions.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies in men worldwide. Clinical management of the disease faces several "bottlenecks," including the presence of occult metastases and a lack of adequate tools for monitoring drug resistance in advanced-stage patients. To address these clinical challenges, Professor Song and her team dedicated years of intensive research to develop a novel nuclear medicine probe with fully independent Chinese intellectual property rights. “Our first-in-class 99mTc-PSMA imaging agent undergoes hepatic metabolism rather than urinary excretion, ” explained Professor Song. “This effectively avoids the ‘artifact’ interference caused by radioactive accumulation in the bladder, thereby significantly improving the diagnostic accuracy of pelvic lesions.” She further noted that this innovative probe fills a critical gap in the domestic field, breaks foreign patent monopolies, and demonstrates overall technical capabilities at the forefront of international standards.
