--- A Brief Introduction, 2024


Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center (FUSCC), one of the budgetary institutions under the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China and an affiliated hospital of Fudan University, was established on March 1, 1931. It is the earliest Grade-A tertiary cancer hospital in China, featuring an integration of medical services, education, research, and prevention.

 

Basic Information

FUSCC has two branches, namely Xuhui Campus and Pudong Campus, and is highly integrated with Shanghai Proton and Heavy lon Hospital. It has obtained approval to establish Fujian Hospital as the National Regional Medical Center and is collaborating with the Xiamen Municipal Government to develop Xiamen Hospital and with the Minhang District Government of Shanghai Municipality to develop Minhang Branch. FUSCC is making efforts to create a new pattern of development with multiple homogeneous centers. As of the end of 2024, FUSCC is staffed by 3,037 employees and provides a total of 2,156 beds in Xuhui and Pudong Centers,,withh 45 clinical and medical technology departments. Currently, FUSCC is striving to transform itself into a national cancer medical center, actively promoting high-quality development and serving as a pilot for public hospitals in Shanghai to achieve high-quality development. In the National Performance Evaluation for Tertiary Public Hospitals, the hospital has been consistently ranked at the highest grade (Grade A) among cancer hospitals nationwide, and in the latest performance evaluation of municipal hospital presidents, it also achieved an A rating (Excellent). FUSCC has always been committed to pioneering the development of oncology in China and has established itself as one of the country's premier oncology centers.

 

Disciplinary Platforms

FUSCC boasts 2 Key Disciplines Designated by the Ministry of Education, 6 National Dey Clinical Specialties, 3 Key Clinical Disciplines Recognized by the National Health Commission, and 1 innovation team supported by the Ministry of Education. It is also home to the Shanghai Clinical Medical Center, the Top Priority Center, Key Municipal Clinical Disciplines of Top Priority, and Municipal Key Clinical Specialty of Top Priority. Additionally, it serves as the host institution for the Shanghai Quality Control Centers for Pathology and Radiotherapy, and the presiding institution of the Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association. The hospital houses a National Institution of Drug Clinical Trial and operates 3 Shanghai Key Laboratories (Breast Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, and Radiation Oncology) and the Shanghai Clinical Research Center for Pathological Diagnosis. Furthermore, it has established Academician Workstations led by Academician Wang Hongyang and Academician Tian Zhigang. The Precision Cancer Cancer Center and Celland Gene Therapy Center have been established. The National Capacity Improvement Project for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Complex and Critical Diseases has been completed recently.

 

Medical Services

In 2024, FUSCC handled 2.3 million outpatient visits, 170,000 inpatient admissions, 76,000 surgeries, and 410,000 radiotherapy sessions, delivering dedicated care to cancer patients. Throughout the year, a total of 1,211 patients were discharged after treatment of proton and heavy ion therapy, with single-device treatment volume ranking highest globally. Upholding a patient-centered philosophy and a commitment to health care for public welfare, the hospital has established itself as a comprehensive center for cancer diagnosis and treatment through initiatives ives such as multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics and wards, precision tumor therapies, minimally invasive surgeries, and whole-process patient management. To enhance patient experience, the hospital has advanced digital transformation in health care, smart hospital infrastructure, day-time surgeries and chemoradiotherapy. To support state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatments, the hospital has equipped itself with cutting-edge medical technologies, including Da Vinci Surgical Robots, MRI-guided linear accelerators, TOMO, LA, PET-CT, PET-MR, and 5.0T MRI. Through unremitting efforts, the latest statistical report shows that the hospital has achieved a 71.8% overall 5-year survival rate for patients with malignant tumors, leading in China and comparable to levels in developed countries.

Hospital experts hold leadership roles in prominent associations such as the China Anti-Cancer Association, with approximately 70 appointments as Vice Presidents, Chairs, Chair-Elects, or Vice Chairs. To strengthen talent pipelines, the hospital operates 8 residency training bases and 8 specialized training bases, nurturing a new generation of young oncology professionals for China annually.

 

Research and Innovation

FUSCC has vigorously promoted its transformation into a research-oriented institution. In 2024, the hospital secured 308 research projects across various funding channels, including 107 projects newly approved by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), ranking among the top in Shanghai. In clinical research, 588 new clinical trials were initiated, with three-quarters led by FUSCC. The hospital was also officially designated as a municipal Model Research Ward. High-impact research output continued to thrive, and an average an impact factor (IF) exceeding 8. In total, 19 papers with an IF > 20 have been published, including one each in the international flagship journals Lancet, JAMA, and BMJ. Collaboration across industry, academia, research, and medicine is continuously strengthened, with annual technology transfer contracts surpassing 54 million yuan. Additionally, the hospital won 15 prestigious scientific and technological awards, including the First Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. Notably, the hospital' s research achievements contributed to six revisions of international clinical guidelines in 2024, amplifying China' s voice and wisdom on the global stage.

 

Mission and Responsibility

The hospital has spearheaded the development of a three-tiered cancer prevention and treatment network, leading a cancer-specialized medical consortium that now spans over 100 member institutions nationwide. Through targeted support programs in Tibet, Xinjiang, Yunnan, and Morocco, the hospital has earned high praise from government authorities and widespread trust from the general public. It also advances global collaboration and exchanges, signing framework agreements with more than 10 world-renowned institutions, including the Anderson Cancer Center in the United States, to foster international partnerships.
